Next stop Tairua

*Interesting fact for those of you who don’t get up at sunrise like I do. The sunrise is opposite to the sunset in colour graduation! I’ve only just realised that 😂 So it’s red first, then orange, then daylight. Sometimes the sky colours up again after it becomes light too *

I stayed at Pauanui four nights in total before heading around to Tairua, which was only a stones throw across the boating channel, but a decent 25 minute drive.

I wanted to go back to Tairua as I’m told that’s the place for a soak in some history. They weren’t wrong! They also have great wifi at the library & the cutest little town you ever saw, perched around the perimeter of the harbour.

It’s weird being able to look across the harbour at the palatial houses of Pauanui though.  I walked 10 mins around the foreshore to the town & grabbed a few pics of interest, & some kauri gum.

Funny things I see...

A gorgeous old sailing boat

The view from my truck

Kauri logs & slabs still in place on the foreshore since the early 1900’s

Already sanded & ready to turn on a lathe. Thinking of a friend who does that

The history trail. I’ll go for the proper walk today

These history posts are all around town

The kauri idea still incredibly hard, although weather aged

Biggest pohutakawa tree I’ve ever seen, I think 🤔

The community hall

A neat sculpture at one end of the estuary on the other side

Good prices To wash your undies in public 😂

Important signs for travellers. Dump station

Just an ATM phone box 😁

A one way concrete bridge beside the kauri plank foot bridge

I’m giving more complete views of places

My camping spot

Kauri remnants sticking out of the bank

A slab laying on top of other slabs & rotting wood

I’m going around all of the freedom camping areas now, & felt completely safe at Pauanui, although alone for the first two nights. Tairua is also nice & safe with multiple places to park & work available.

My take on the work/living situation is this. Why don’t the local councils provide a place for people to live in vehicles, with dump station, fresh water & rubbish bins, toilets, & service it twice a day, like they do in Wellington? Although we can’t actually live in that parking spot. There’s plenty of work available but no rental accommodation the locals in the small towns are saying.

Sewing day today. I want that costume done & dusted!

  1. Fantastic travels and sights in the sunny Coromandel...Tairua looks as good as I remember...liked the new historical information dotted around town and the public sculpture like nikau palms...(I think they were?) Happy travels!
