Bus trips in Hamilton-The Orbiter
I’ve decided to share some of the things I see in & around Hamilton, after some advice on what to blog about from a friend recently. Otherwise I might just go all philosophy like on you😉
I needed some cable ties for the current complex costume I’m making & googled where I could get the best deal. So it’s off to The Wharehouse at The Base in Te Rapa from Chartwell.
I walked to a stop near where I am based & chatted to a very helpful young man, thankful for my platinum hair which makes me more vulnerable 😂 and helps me be more approachable. Or at least it seems that way to me 😉 He gave me great instructions on where to get off & saved me having to ask the busy driver 😅 The current app isn’t very user friendly for a newbie 😉
We had a smooth but speedy trip up through the lovely tree lined suburbs of Gordonton, Flagstaff & Pukete to what’s called The Hub in Te Rapa. Obviously where the buses merge to & depart from, but also where the new train station is. Or at least stops. It’s the last bus stop in the north bound direction, so I couldn’t mistake it in any way. It does a loop around the city, so I’m going to stay on one day & see where I go. Saves me driving the fuel thirsty truck right now. That & having to watch out for low hanging trees.
The great ascent to the summit 😂
Next I did the ascent to the over bridge up what looks like two flights of stairs from the bottom. Reaching the top was no mean feat but I made it…thinking I’ll do this just once! There are lifts provided for the less mobile of us 😉 Down I went across the new railway lines to the area where The Base & Te Awa are. After a right turn I was there 🤩 Magic! And all for $1.70…until the fares go up to $2 on July 12th. It’s cheaper to get a Bee card than to use cash in Hamilton. Apparently these cards can be used nationwide & are used to catch any form of public transport, being buses & trains.

After a bit of browsing at a very organised & well run Look Sharp store for price comparison, I went to the Warehouse & bought the cable ties & went back to Look Sharp for a few other things that I needed for the two costumes I’m both making & collating, for an event in the next two weeks. My darling neighbour keeps dropping me in little treats like mandarins, pizza & yesterday & today some money for my trip. She’s like a Mum to me 🥰 So that enabled me to buy a few things. So sweet! I then reversed the process back to where I started, & of course found that I didn’t need the ties after all 🤦♀️
I couldn’t find a plaque to tell me the story of this sculpture. A nod to the ancestors of Hamilton I suppose.
Everything a person needs is here, pedestrian crossings, toilets, a bike house, seats, shelter. The Waikato does customer service Really Well 🏆
